THANKFUL WORDS FROM THE FAMILY OF ORAZ ADEL
Dear workers of the “Mercy” Volunteer Society, who presented priceless glory to us when they helped our daughter – Oraz Adel! Liliya Musaeva, the girl’s mother, is writing to you. I would like to say a lot to the people who responsibly and unselfishly pursue the job of saving children’s lives - the lives of not your own children, but of those you don’t know at all. These are children whose problems are very far from you, and you could just close your eyes and hears – and there wouldn’t be any problems.. But your humanity doesn’t allow you to pass by callously. And that is why I would like to say “Thank You!”...
Timofei was born like any other child – a long-awaited angel of his parents. He was developing according to his age bringing a lot of joy to his parents. At the age of 6 months he started sitting and crawling, at 8 he stood up on his feet and started walking using support.
However, at the age of 9 months his mother noticed that Tima discontinued walking. After a week he completely quit standing up on his feet. They started visiting different doctors, but no one could find an abnormality. Only an orthopedist quickly mentioned that the head was a bit too big and advised to see a neuropathologist. An ultrasound disclosed hydrocephalus, a cyst of huge size. No one could explain how a 9-month old baby could have a cyst size 7 by 8 cm.
Tima was hospitalized only four weeks later – the hospital was overbooked several months ahead. His relatively fast hospitalization was due to the chief of the neurosurgery unit of the children’s hospital who noticed a woman dashing around the corridor in tears with a baby in her hands. By then the baby could not even sit on his own. Later they were told that they only had had 10 days at their possession – after that full loss of sight, and then the end…
Three weeks Tima spent in a hospital. In the meantime his mother collected all the available information about the disease and its treatment. Doctors recommended going abroad for a surgery. The family had to get into debts to pay for one in St. Petersburg. The baby was operated on November 26, 2007. Those were five most torturous hours for his parents…
As a result of the operation, the baby had a shunt implanted in his head acting like a valve opening at excessive pressure and letting surplus liquid out from the head into the abdominal space. For that purpose they laid a special tubule under the skin across the body – from head to stomach. However, nine months after the surgery this catheter broke. Doctors in Kazakhstan declined to operate him. The family again started collecting money for another trip to St. Petersburg. The survey showed that the shunt broke because of the cyst. There was no guarantee the shunt wouldn’t break again.
That’s what happened indeed – it lasted only 10 months after the second operation. Over that time the mother bonded with her son so much, she felt the moment this happened…
However, another examination showed that after the second break there was very good chance of getting rid of the shunt for good – this time the circumstances were in Tima’s favor. They only needed more money for the thorough examination and surgery in St. Petersburg. However, after the first two trips the family ran out of savings, instead they were all in debts… Help from the community became Tima’s last hope for full recovery…
On February 25, 2010 the boy was operated at the Neurology Scientific and Research Center named after Polenov (St. Petersburg) where the shunt was ligated. On March 1, 2010 he had another operation to remove the shunt and the cyst. On March 7, 2010 Timofei and his mother came back home, the boy is now going through recovery. We wish Tima all the best!
